Rethinking Indigenous African Mark-Making

In this series, I delve into the rich tapestry of indigenous African mark-making, challenging the reductive classifications that have long overshadowed these creations. Often relegated to the realms of craft or dismissed as black magic, the profound artistry of indigenous African cultures has been persistently undervalued by the Western art sector. Yet, paradoxically, this very art has inspired countless Western artists, many of whom have built lucrative careers by drawing upon its motifs and techniques. My work seeks to rectify this historical oversight, honouring the ingenuity and sophistication of African mark-making traditions. Through careful research and deep engagement with these ancestral practices, I aim to integrate their unique symbolism and methods into my contemporary artwork. By doing so, I hope to not only pay homage to the creative legacy of our indigenous artists but also to illuminate the enduring relevance and aesthetic power of their contributions.
