This May, as we ignite Burns Awareness Month in South Africa, Smile Foundation, in partnership with Tarrow Holdings and proudly supported by the Fire Protection Association of Southern Africa (FPASA), is launching a transformative campaign to tackle burn injuries and empower recovery.
Tarrow Holdings has sparked this campaign with their support and commitment to spreading the message. Now, we need your fire to fuel lasting change. Our goal is to raise R300,000 to prevent burn injuries and provide critical support for burn survivors.
While Burns Awareness Month kicks off the campaign, its impact will extend far beyond May. This is just the beginning — with your help, we will continue to light the way to recovery for months to come.
The Stark Truth: Burn Injuries in South Africa
Every year, burn injuries in South Africa affect millions of lives and the need for preventive action and support has never been more urgent. Consider these numbers:
- 3.2% of South Africans suffer burn injuries annually — that’s nearly 2 million people.
- Over 3,200 need specialised burn care every year.
- Children under 10 make up more than 80% of burn injuries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- South Africa’s burn-related mortality rate is double that of many developed nations.
